Her Air Nomad ancestors, fleeing the air nomad genocide in 0 AG, took up with a Northern Water Tribe sailing ship as [[Avatar/Kaizhai Air Nomads|kaizhai]]. She grew up on one of her extended family's sailing ships, which was involved in trading, shipping and fishing activities in the Northern Sea, visiting far Northern ports of the Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation colonies (until the outbreak of war between the Fire Nation and the Southern Water Tribe) and the settlements along the Northern Water Tribe coastlands.
Her family was preserving secret airbending traditions, but Amirluq was found to be a talented waterbender at a young age. Among non-urban Northern Water Tribe people, the gender role distinctions pertaining to bending are looser than with urban people, with only the most exclusively combat-oriented waterbending being reserved to men, and only high-level healing bending being reserved to women. Accordingly, she had a relatively broad training in waterbending within the constraints of her environment.
She has continued working in the family business, with her bending being valuable to it.
