Ketelvilich is a town in the Southern Nitan State, near the Northern Divide and the border with the Yonggan State. It is situated on the Great Qin Road and is the Northern terminus of the Ostrich-Horse Road. In spite of these connections - it has overland access to roads leading to the Ostrich-Horse River and ultimately the the Western Lake - its importance to trade is more as a waypoint and local hub than a transcontinental one. During the Hao Ting renaissance, a canal and drainage project was planned to increase the viability of agriculture and trade, but it was abandoned as too expensive after the death of Avatar Kyoshi. It is also locally important for its smelting industry. The fortified town center of Ketelvilich is built on a large tor, and other similar formations nearby have also been developed. North of the town is agricultural land formed by the abortive drainage project, giving way to interminable bogs, shallow lakes, and hydric forest biomes. The soils north of the town do not support stone construction well, though some have tried with varying degrees of persistence. Owing to its proximity to the Northern divide and the relative shallowness of its bedrock, Ketelvilich itself is able to have stone walls and buildings. Ketelvilich's demographics are about 60% indigenous Northern people (Beituzhu), of mixed waterbending (Shuizu) and earthbending stock. They mostly identify as Nitanese particularly. There are significant Zhongzu, Yonggan, and Chenbaoese minorities, as well as non-Nitanese Beituzhu. The Yonggan are mostly employed in the metalworking industry, whereas most Chenbaoese came as traders, and the Zhongzu as farmers during the Hao Ting renaissance. All groups are, however, found in diverse occupations. Exports are mainly peat charcoal and ironwork. Iron is produced from bog iron ore mined locally, and the wrought-iron products are valued for their degree of natural rust-resistance. Trade overland to its neighboring major settlements on the Qin Road, Jumara Town and Ele Town, mostly exchanges metal goods for North Sea trade goods and staple grains from Yongganguo. Peat charcoal goes south to the Karki-Khan mountains, where some Yonggan smiths prefer it. Slyech son of Ch'uvay is the Presiding Elder of Ketelvilich, which is under indigenous rule under the Nitan State government. He is advised by the Council of Matriarchs representing the major Nitanese families of Ketelvilich. Given its position on the Great Qin Road and Ostrich Horse Road, Ketelvilich has a well developed hospitality sector, with several inns, and a daily market. People are generally accustomed to outsiders and travelers, though there are Nitanese nationalists who are wary of the expansionist tendencies of the Yonggan state and Chenbao.
