The Miaotaizu (ččšć, a phonetic loan for their endonym "Mau Dai") are a minority ethnic group living mostly in the highlands abutting the southeastern jungles of the Earth Kingdom. They are known for their textile arts and silversmithing, and grow rice in hillside terraces, also engaging in market gardening. The Mau Dai rose up against a brutal local ruler in the tributary Kingdom of Zou around 40 BG, and fought a brief and bloody war against the Hao-Ting dynasty before the Avatar Roku persuaded the opposing sides to accept a negotiated peace. The Mau Dai resumed sending taxes and tribute to the capital, but thereafter would be governed by an ethnic Mau Dai civil official rather than an outsider. This action was considered to show the weakness of the central government, as it violated the principle that an official should not serve in their home province, lest they accumulate too much local power and independence.
Besides elaborate brocade, their traditional formal dress includes a turban for adult men.
Miaotai are divided into Eastern and Western. The Western have their ancestral homeland in the Gaoling Mountains, the Eastern in Lancang. Evidently, they parted ways across the Lancang river valley in high antiquity, but their languages and cultures are clearly related to each other and distinct from those of Gaoling and the Zou foothills.
