| Muke enjoyed a much better education that her social station would suggest, being educated alongside Mukushen and Sholantu with the same curriculum. However, this was for a reason that she had distinctive ambivalence about as a child. Since Sholantu and Mukushen were nobles of the [[Avatar/Great Ri|imperial blood]], it would have been a capital offense under Nara law for a commoner or foreigner to strike them without their consent, even for disciplinary purposes (minor corporal punishment for poor academic performance is a common method of education in the Earth Kingdom.) Since many of their tutors and instructors were commoners, when Mukushen or Sholantu did something warranting physical discipline, the tutors would punish Muke instead. Fortunately, both of them were relatively well-behaved students who liked Muke, so it could have been much worse. | Muke enjoyed a much better education that her social station would suggest, being educated alongside Mukushen and Sholantu with the same curriculum. MOGIYA-NARA Muke is a young Yonggan woman, a commoner of the exiled Nara clan. She is the milk-sister of the Imperial Princess AISIN-NARA Mukushen (i.e. Muke's biological mother also nursed Mukushen) and is close friends with Mukushen and her cousin AISIN-NARA Sholantu, despite the disparity in rank. When Muke was 13, the Aisin-Nara family was overthrown by the Ayin-Nara. After Muke's mother Hojo recovered from the injuries she sustained in the coup, Muke left home to find her milk-sister, who had fled the violence.
Muke was conceived during a one-night-stand between her mother Hojo and a beetle-helmeted merchant mercenary earthbender visiting their autumn encampment as a caravan guard. She met her father only a handful of times growing up and received some gifts and letters from him. He was killed in a fight with sandbender tribes in the Siwang desert when Muke was nine, but she didn't find out until a year later.

Mukushen regarded Muke as her de facto lady-in-waiting despite her official position as a housemaid. When Mukushen began her religious training, she suggested to her mentor that Muke would be a suitable candidate for instruction as a midwife, and Muke was attending deliveries as the apprentice of a Nara midwife at the time of the coup. Muke has some musical talent, being very good at playing the soprano badgermole horn, unlike her milk-sister. She also sings, and is literate with a classical education appropriate to her age.
Muke is an earthbender, though she has not received nearly as much formal training as Mukushen, and also lacks some of the princess' raw talent with the element. She is reasonably competent in the Northern Way school of earthbending.
Muke was sighted during the one-off "Secrets of Chenbao," in the eponymous Northwestern state of the Earth Kingdom, working with the Fire Nation colonial photographer SATO.
