<Jelle> Well, her family are nobles, and just high enough to be allowed into the Fire Lord's court to gawk and fawn over how awesome he and his family are, and thus act as social climbers.

<Jelle> Well, the idea is that she's escaping an arranged marriage, so it depends on the legal age in the Fire Nation. Though 16-17ish is my expectation. Born as an only child to Fire Nation nobles, Suzin grew up as a face out in the crowd of courtiers that surrounded the Fire Lord’s family. And was subsequently expected to add prestige to her family name and their ruler. She was afforded a personal trainer to teach her firebending and the savoir faire of the court according to her parents’ exacting standards. Though she took her lessons seriously, she would also cause mischief with or to the other kids when she thought no one was watching. She personally felt the Fire Lord was too serious and this was reflected in the strict protocol and lack of free choice afforded to the families clamouring for his attention and favour.

Suzin would practice archery, swordfighting and martial arts when free time permitted. She had become fascinated with tales of the famed warrior Yuyan. She hoped joining the Fire Nation army would be her means to escape the dull, treacherous life at court. To her dismay, despite her diligent studies of firebending and combat, each attempt to enrol in a military academy was rejected. When she complained to her parents, begging them to use their influence to get her admitted, they revealed they instead planned to marry her to the son of a general, thereby tying their family closer to the inner circle of the Fire Lord’s war cabinet. They explained they would not risk her life in war, or allow her a career that meant her future husband couldn’t keep a watchful eye on her, and had therefore convinced her father-in-law to-be to pressure the military into keeping Suzin from enlisting. The groom also happened to be a boring, unsympathetic and pugnacious character who she hadn’t gotten along with during childhood. Despite her pleading, crying and screaming to call off the arrangement, Suzin could not change her parents’ minds.

<Bryce> Jelle, can you tell me more about this escaping an arranged marriage plot?
<Bryce> Interesting, okay, that could work
<Jelle> Well, her parents think that marrying their only daughter to a general in the Firelord's staff will help them get noticed. Suzin thinks the general's son is an unimaginative, pugnacious dullard, and always had a misschievious streak despite being polite.
One night, she packed up a number of her possessions, some supplies, money, and her father’s heirloom sword before escaping the mansion in search of a free life. Stealing some poor fisherman’s boat, Suzin sailed towards the mainland colonies in the hope she could blend in and lose the trail of whatever henchmen her family would send to retrieve her. After several days at sea, with a minor stop at the most remote of the home islands for resupply, Suzin sailed straight into a Fire Nation blockade fleet. Unable to outpace the steamships, with the winds against her, she was captured and imprisoned as a deserter. When she told the ship captain who she was and that her parents would be grateful to him, she was instead informed that he already knew who she was, that her parents had put out the word of her flight, and disowned her to the Fire Lord to save their reputation. He had been told to return the sword, and deal with their daughter as with any traitor to the Fire Nation.
