• Gendarmerie of the Allied Worlds

The Gendarmerie of the Allied Worlds (GAW) are the main federal police force of the Free Confederation of Allied Worlds. The GAW is a uniformed paramilitary organization that provides security and investigative services for civilian Allied Worlds facilities which are extraterritorial from the member states, and also investigates certain categories of crimes involving multiple member states of the Allied Worlds, for example piracy in space and extortion involving interplanetary commerce. (The Spaceborne Infantry of the Allied Worlds Space Force provides security for military installations, but does not have civil police powers.) The GAW also provides the armed police force for the Capital Station and other jurisdictions under the direct control of the Allied Worlds, though its primary police force is the (normally unarmed) Capital Police. The GAW also provides counterintelligence and diplomatic security services.

GAW facilities exist on all of the Twelve Worlds, the number and extent of such facilities varying considerably.

Personnel

The GAW has both sworn agents and many non-sworn civilian employees. The head of the GAW is the Director General, Amara Wan of Nguyen's Planet. The Deputy Director General is Nero Italic, of New Iridia. Sworn agents are differentiated into gendarmes (specializing in security) and detectives (specializing in criminal investigation and counterintelligence):

The GAW operates small orbital spacecraft, as well as aircraft, maritime and ground vehicles where necessary for its police functions, but relies on the AWSF or civilian common carriers for interplanetary and interstellar transport.
