Bluestar the Brilliant was historical archmage, who founded New Canterlot as a cloistered wizard-state around his tower on the Isle of Yore. Bluestar was incredibly talented in magical life extension.

Born to Equestrian envoys to the Great Oriental Duchy, Bluestar started his career as a mage by enrolling in the Dream Valley University College of Magic in 2016 AE. After completing his education in 2022 AE, he joined the magical civil services of Eastern Ponyland. He was made an archmage-candidate in 2040, and after a then-customary period of advanced study, ensconced as Archmage of the Isle of Yore in 2042 AE.

Bluestar's tenure as archmage was relatively unremarkable and apparently uncontroversial, but New Canterlot has not allowed independent scholars access to his private papers and records. Bluestar made a number of improvements to his sconce, the Lake Tower, and its grounds.

After the Catastrophe, Bluestar used his magic to create a cloistered city-state with himself as regent, populating it largely with refugees from Equestria. In honor of the fallen capital of Equestria, he named the city New Canterlot. He used magic to extend his life, ruling as a de facto philosopher king for centuries. In 2580, Bluestar created a democratic parliament and gradually devolved most of his power as head of state on it, thereby establishing New Canterlot (and later New Equestria) as a constitutional monarchy.

Bluestar's death in 2835, while not entirely unexpected, was rather sudden, and the magical cloister faded soon thereafter. Fortunately, his chosen successor, Ephemeris, rose to the challenge of adapting New Canterlot to the post-cloister reality, and was acclaimed its first Queen.
