Calkin is a former settlement near Horseshoe Lake. It was a newly established, small, quiet community at the time of the catastrophe, then hastily fortified as civilization broke down afterward. Being surrounded by the lake on three sides made it very defensible (as long as the lake was filled), and partly for this reason it was the stronghold of a warlord in the nadir of the feudal Dark Age. The warlord’s eventual fall and the loss of water from the lake resulted in the town’s destruction, and it currently lies in half-buried ruins that have been partially picked over by various travelers and adventurers across the centuries.
