Ayon is the pony community living in what was once the Canterlot metro area. They mostly live underground in the ruins of the Canterlot metro subway system, and come up to forage. A few very hardy ponies live aboveground or in appropriate ruins. The ponies there have a dietary immunity to fatal hoofrot. (Though many possess superficial lesions that make their coats sparkle.) Their legends tell of a great alchemist who came out of the forest to tell them to eat a certain plant. They have to limit their numbers because of the scarcity of the plant, and consider reproduction without the consent of the clan as a crime worthy of banishment from their foraging territory. Their government is simple, with direct democratic and tribal characteristics. The hybrid forest is more water-tolerant than regular crystal forest, which is why the hybrid forest is outcompeting the regular crystal forest, and is more photosynthetically efficient than the regular everfree forest; the hybrid forest is actually expanding at a significant rate.

Ayon is in the Everfree Hybrid Forest, a region of Everfree and Crystal Forest co-growth. There is a rich hybrid ecosystem, but a lot of the life forms are dangerous, particularly crystal timber wolves, which are unusually durable. Wirewind is produced by pods that form underground in the crystal forest "root system" which is exposed in some places in the tunnels.

The everfree and crystal forests did not hybridize naturally; it was the result of the work of a mad scientist, GMEmberhexe, who lives in the ruins of Canterlot tower. Emberhexe is the last survivor of a community of well-heeled survivalists who fled to an abandoned research base in the Everfree that they had refitted between the war of the shadow and the coming of en-netsusep. Their population dwindled.
