Eyewitness reports obtained by the ''Banner'' indicate that the disaster was no accident - indeed, Ms. Reaction was noted by her husband for her consciousness of safety. Purportedly, a gryphon and dragon were seen to attack an earth pony in the street, and an explosive device was thrown from an alley prior to the explosion in the store. The police do not think the concussion of the smaller bomb caused the deadly blast, though some ponies were wounded by it according to witnesses. The water tank from on top of a hotel was used, in a prodigious display of telekinetic magic, for what may have been an attempt to extinguish a fire resulting from the explosion, though witness reports are conflicted. The police are very interested in further reports of the disaster by eyewitnesses, and have indicated to the ''Banner'' that they expect to have sorted things out better by this afternoon. Four Dead in Mining Store Explosion

(There is a photo of the aftermath of the disaster, in which Emerald and Rosie are clearly visible looking through the rubble.)

Around 8:30 in the morning of 29 Gourds, a deadly explosion rocked the Quicksilver District, leaving four ponies dead instantly and over a dozen wounded under unclear circumstances suggestive of anything but a simple accident. The explosion was centered on Nitro's Mining Supplies and was believed to have been caused by the detonation of nitroglycerine blasting materials being prepared there. Among the dead is the proprietor, local businessmare Nitration "Nitro" Reaction, aged 32. Also killed were Gold Pan, 42, and Iron Flask, 27, residents in the upstairs apartment of the adjacent Mercury Distillers Publishing House, and an unidentified red unicorn mare aged in her late twenties, with a red coat, dark red mane, and a cutie mark of a red faceted gem. Anyone with information about the identity of this person is encouraged to provide that information to the Northwest Irongate Constabulary.

In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, moderatorial candidate Safety First suggested that perhaps it is time to adopt a scheme of separating buildings in which potentially hazardous industrial activities are conducted from residential and market areas, to minimize the impact of similar accidents. Opponent Free Spirit disagreed, telling the Banner that Mr. First's ideas would be the thin edge of a wedge allowing a Docktown-type zoning system into Irongate, with attendant opportunities for corruption. "Nitro's neighbors knew what was going on there, it was no secret - and they didn't complain. Besides, everypony is saying that this wasn't an accident anyway - there's no reason we need this kind of overreaching 'zoning' system, we just need to be very careful in our work. Zoning won't stop people from dying if there is an industrial accident, safe procedures will."
