A large island, separated from mainland Ponyland by the Ashen Sea, and (distantly) from Equestria by the Ocean of Dreams. Smaller Island chains surrounding the Isle of Yore are the Hayminnow Islands, Surveyor Islands, and Cake Islands. Since the fall of the oceans, the Isle of Yore is now no longer technically an island, although this nomenclatural point is rarely respected by contemporary cartographers.
Pre-catastrophic History
The Isle was first inhabited by Boars, who were reportedly divided into many feuding tribes. Around the second century AE, Zebra explorers discovered the Isle of Yore and attempted to colonize it. Their efforts on the Isle of Yore proper were resisted with some success by the boars, and they focused their efforts on the Hayminnow Islands. Later, ponies came to Isle and established outposts; the Isle in the late second and third centuries became a trading center between Ponylanders, Equestrians, and Zebras. Eventually, as Boar resistance failed, the Isle became a part of Ponyland, being incorporated into the Oriental Grand Duchy. By the sixth century, it was considered important enough to have its own ensconced archmage. The island came to have three counts, as well. The nearby Hayminnow Islands remained under Zebra control, sometimes independently under local Zebra rulers, and sometimes under the domination of Zebra overlords from elsewhere.
Pre-catastrophic Climate
The Isle of Yore had a warm, tropical climate with wet and (relatively) dry seasons prior to the vast climate change experienced after the Catastrophe. The mountains were always cooler, and residents originating in temperate climates would sometimes seek relief from the tropical heat and humidity by vacationing in mountain villages.
