Biographical facts:

Queen Meridian is the monarch of New Equestria, although her son, crown prince Daybreak, currently rules (as her proxy) as prince regent, as she is reportedly ill and has not been seen in public since the Summer Sun Celebration of 3335.

Meridian identifies (and is generally identified as) an alicorn, although some speculate that she may only be a pegacorn. Her children, princess Nightfall and prince Daybreak, are respectively a unicorn and a pegasus; her father, King Daystar, was a unicorn, and her mother, the Queen Consort Compass Rose, was an earth pony of mixed lineage.

Early in her reign, Meridian took a great interest in the Old Religion, directing a lavish renovation of the Temple of the Undying Sun in New Canterlot, and generously endowing scholarships for young clerics to study theology there. She had a particular interest in the Elements of Harmony, funding a number of unsuccessful expeditions to find the physical artifacts lost during the Catastrophe. Meridian relinquished her prerogative to appoint the Right Reverend Archimandrite of New Canterlot, the de facto head of the Old Religion on the Isle of Yore, allowing the state religion to chose its own spiritual leader.

Meridian has pursued a moderate foreign policy, although her later reign was marred by the Confetti War. Domestically, she built a new aquaduct and founded a village, named after Bluestar the Brilliant, with the intent of increasing agricultural exports to the Northern Dusts and bringing them under the influence of New Equestria peacefully. She has maintained a good working relationship with parliament.

Little is publicly known of Meridian's illness, and the matter of establishing Daybreak's regency was addressed in closed extraordinary session of parliament.
