The Forsaken Isle is an island controlled by the Kingdom of Heghom. It is roughly equidistant between the Kingdom, and the shores of the Northern and Southern Continents. It has a large population of seabirds. The terrain is very porous karst, and receives relatively little rainfall. It has almost no sources of above-ground freshwater despite its relatively large size. Its economic importance is mainly for the extraction of fertilizers, work carried out by the inmates of a Heghomic penal colony.
The Foresaken Isle is home to the infamous Pit of Oblivion, a prison built into a littoral cave complex. It was in use from 1607-1704, to house political and religious prisoners, and criminals who continued to commit crimes while living in the penal colony. King Mater formally abolished its use, though it had been empty for some time prior, inmates having died, been pardoned, or transferred elsewhere. Re-offenders from the penal colony are now confined in a more ordinary (but also more cost-effective) prison in the only substantial town and port, Cape Boole.
