Queen Meridian was a monarch of New Equestria. At the time PRPG2 began, her son, crown prince Daybreak, ruled (as her proxy) as prince regent, as she was ill (and indeed had not been seen in public since the Summer Sun Celebration of 3335.)

Meridian identified (and was generally identified as) an alicorn, although some speculated that she may have only been a pegacorn. Her children, princess Nightfall and prince Daybreak, were respectively a unicorn and a pegasus; her father, King Daystar, was a unicorn, and her mother, the Queen Consort Compass Rose, was an earth pony of mixed lineage.

Early in her reign, Meridian took a great interest in the Old Religion, directing a lavish renovation of the Temple of the Undying Sun in New Canterlot, and generously endowing scholarships for young clerics to study theology there. She had a particular interest in the Elements of Harmony, funding a number of unsuccessful expeditions to find the physical artifacts lost during the Catastrophe. Meridian relinquished her prerogative to appoint the Right Reverend Archimandrite of New Canterlot, the de facto head of the Old Religion on the Isle of Yore, allowing the state religion to chose its own spiritual leader.

Meridian pursued a moderate foreign policy, although her later reign was marred by the Confetti War. Domestically, she built a new aquaduct and founded a village, named after Bluestar the Brilliant, with the intent of increasing agricultural exports to the Northern Dusts and bringing them under the influence of New Equestria peacefully. She maintained a good working relationship with parliament.

Little was publicly known of Meridian's illness, and the matter of establishing Daybreak's regency was addressed in closed extraordinary session of parliament.

Queen Meridian was killed by the changeling hive infiltrating New Canterlot when a party of adventurers drove the changelings from the capital. The Crown Prince (who was also acting as regent in her incapacity), Daybreak, died in the same incident. Her daughter, Princess Nightfall, succeeded her as Queen of New Equestria.
