Landline telephones exist in the RIS universe. They apparently have an automatic switching system using dials, though older phones that are cranked and require speaking with an operator are still common.

A phone number was spoken by an old person as "Cirrotai 3, 118" and read back as 243-118 by Ms. K in "With Awe and Trembling," suggesting that there are letters on a numerical dial with 24 corresponding, perhaps, to "CI" in "Cirrotai."
