Landline telephones exist in the RIS universe. They apparently have an automatic switching system using dials, though older phones that are cranked and require speaking with an operator are still common. A phone number was spoken by an old person as "Cirrotai 3, 118" and read back as 243-118 by Ms. K in "With Awe and Trembling," suggesting that there are letters on a numerical dial with 24 corresponding, perhaps, to "CI" in "Cirrotai." It seems likely that the more populous urban districts are divided into multiple named zones, because there are surely more than a thousand telephone lines Downtown, for example. This system is likely only for Simha City and its outlying districts - long distance calls likely require manual intervention of an operator.
