Starbeasts are extra-dimensional beings that, while not forged of pony magic, utilize a similar magical spectrum. They come in many varieties, but always correlate with an animal constellation (well known or otherwise). Amazingly, while they have easily identified sexes, any starbeast may successfully mate with any other, the result of which matching the type of the mother. Additionally, all hatch from eggs.
Despite appearing to be of various species, they have several common traits:
- Starbeasts look like they are full of stars, galaxies existing under their fur or feathers.
- They are not organic, but magic and energy and bleed starlight if cut or otherwise injured.
- All startbeasts are magically sensitive and, in many cases, have a magical trait or ability entirely unique to them.
- They are also all omnivores, redefining the term by being able to convert to energy anything they swallow, be it organic or inorganic. They do have preferences when it comes to taste, though.
- Starbeasts can change their size, moving more or less of their bodies into extra-dimensional spaces.
- The more of their bodies they expose to our plane of existence the worse they can be hurt by attacks, so they have been known to only grow over time as they mature and their sense of comfort and control over their environment grows.
Another affect of their being larger than they appear is their injuries heal faster, cuts and bruses being smaller compared to the rest of their body than they appear. Additionally, should a starbeast seek to injure a person, the injuries inflicted tend to take longer to heal. damage bleeding into the injury from extra-dimensional space in a mirror of how the starbeast's own mundane injuries can bleed out of this normal spacial dimension.
- Fully mature starbeasts can shift their bodies in and out of this plane at will. Certain spells and alchemical potions can force a starbeast to retreat entirely from our plane of existence and fully into their extra-dimensional space. Some mature starbeasts can use this ability to fully retreat into other space in order to seemingly "teleport" from one place to another.
A final trait they all share is the ease of their domestication. They tame fairly easily compared to most wild animals, though instances of their being tamed are exceedingly rare, mostly due to the raw power and danger starbeasts tend to wield, as well as their rarity. Interestingly, of the few noted instances of tamed starbeasts, all had a magical ability or spell that, in some way, complimented their master. This fact is best described through examples:
- The zebra Akasha was known to have a starbeast rooster known as a Gallus. Akasha is said to be a poor fighter and her Gallus had the ability to cast a destructive beam of energy that could overwhelm even the strongest foes.
- The zebra Jyotis was known to have a starbeast hound known as a Canis Minor. Jyotis is said to of had a bad memory and her Canis Minor was known for his uncanny ability to immediately lead her to anything or anyone she asked for.
