Although technological progress has in many ways overtaken traditional magic in Ponecia, the presence of magic wielding creatures has allowed it to remain a constant in its society. In many cases, magic and technology are used together, as two different fields of science complementing one another. Magic is studied at dedicated colleges for those pursuing a more dedicated, general education in the field of magic. But many subjects of magics may be taken from other colleges and schools should their application benefit the direction of a chosen career path. A unicorn studying to be a cryostorage technician for example will often take frost magic as a subject, which is taught at any college or university dedicated to educating such professionals.

Inhibitor Technology

The constant need to safeguard one's self from magic abuse and exploitation has spurred the development of technology and artefacts designed to weaken and block the magic from spellcasters. From shielding to prevent teleportation in- and out of sensitive areas to pocket protectors that stop intrusive telekinesis spells from pilfering one's saddlebags. Many of these are commonly available and widely used, as there is no guarantee of safety in Ponecia beyond what you can buy. It hasn't made magic obsolete by any means, but has stopped many of the most flagrant abuses since the time of Magisters Wars, when a trained mage could kill with a simple overcharged telekinesis spell.

Magic Pollution

The spread of inhibitor technology, and its effects bleeding through into the atmosphere and reacting with ambient magic in densely populated and highly industrialized cities across Ponecia has been proven by scientists to have an overall negative effect on spellcasters. While they insist the magic pollution has no significant detrimental effect on the spells cast by unicorns and other creatures of magical ability, it has been proven to affect the effectiveness of some magic. Is also has slightly elevated the likelihood of cornuvascular diseases in unicorns living in these polluted areas. Spellcasters living in the countryside have a noticeable advantage in ability.

Studies into the effects of magic pollution started a movement demanding that industries take greater care to avoid magic pollution and make consumer products safer, with less risk of inhibition bleed. Only a few companies have taken steps to do so, and they are widely criticized as ineffective.
