The chief export of the Nara in their exile in the Hanwang desert is a landrace of small domesticated badgermole suitable for desert conditions, the dwarf badgermole or Nara badgermole. They are of use throughout the arid regions of the Earth Kingdom, including the Si Wong Desert, and of other places where a small badgermole is preferred to larger animals. They are noted for being corrigible and relatively easily trained, but intelligent. They are around 1.8-2.0m tall when full-grown and take about eight years to reach full maturity, somewhat faster than other badgermoles. Besides being smaller, they are lighter in color and furrier than wild badgermoles, with hairy tails. Like them, they are blind; occasionally a sighted badgermole is born as their blindness is caused by a single-point mutation that is not selected against in their wild environment as wild badgermoles generally live in environs of complete darkness. (Indeed, vision is somewhat harmful to the earthbending abilities of badgermoles, as their eyesight is poor anyway and they become easily spooked and disoriented by lights.) Sighted badgermoles are more common among dwarf badgermoles, owing to a founder effect; and is considered a defect in the breed; such individuals are usually blindfolded to prevent the issues noted above. Dwarf badgermoles have distinct Winter and Summer coats.

The dwarf badgermole is also a good dairy breed, giving relatively abundant milk, though the popularity of badgermole dairy products is limited outside the Western peoples and is generally considered to be an acquired taste.

Badgermoles are omnivorous. Besides eating cacti (they are immune to the hallucinogenic effects of the species found in the Si Wong) and sand tubers, they also eat the larvae and pupae of the giant rhinoceros beetle. For this reason, the Nara are usually disliked by the Beetle-helmet peoples who depend on the latter animal for transportation.

Traditionally, Yonggan people have trained badgermoles to respond to a badgermole horn, a double-reed instrument similar to a Rauschpfeife or crumhorn in that the reed is enclosed in a windcap and blown with a slot in the mouthpiece. It uses a pentatonic scale and is a bass instrument. It is long and straight in form and has a spike at the far end which can be planted in the ground to better communicate with subterranean badgermoles. (E.g. to call them back to the surface when they are hunting underground.) Although it has a utilitarian "signaling" function, it is also used in Yonggan music.
