Overview

The Zang (髒) people are originally inhabitants of Zangguo (髒國) in the Northern Earth Kingdom, but are now widely disseminated through the Northern and Western Earth Kingdom. The name "Zang" is an exonym given to them by the Ganjinese (in an earlier phase of their linguistic development, prior to the /n/-/ŋ/ merger in Ganjinese), and which literally means "Dirty [people]." However, the term was re-appropriated by the Zangs who now use it themselves, usually with the dialectical pronunciation [ɖ͡ʐejŋ˥], i.e. Zheing.

The Zangs, with their unique culture and habits, tend to live in villages among themselves. They are a settled people, and do farm and raise livestock, but have always placed extensive cultural importance to hunting. They followed the Ganjinese diaspora, often establishing villages alongside Ganjinese trading posts, and serving as hired muscle. Despite their historical ties, or perhaps because of them, they have accumulated many grievances against the Ganjinese. These grudges have involved anything from sporting matches to being snubbed for an enthronement ceremony. That being said, many Ganjinese and Zangs recognize that their strained historical relationship is ultimately mutually beneficial.

The Zangs value their individual freedom, and are among the most accepting people in the Earth Kingdom.

Zangguo is among the poorer provinces of the Earth Kingdom, suffering from poorly maintained infrastructure, but it is also largely unspoiled and has been largely ignored by both the Fire Nation and the rapacious warlords of the Earth Kingdom, who hesitate to recruit Zangs because of their reputation for unruly martial behavior. The same cannot be said for many of the coastal villages of the Zang diaspora, which were often directly in the way of the Fire Nation invasion.

Editorial point of clarification - On the canonical Avatar wiki, the name of the tribe is spelled "Zhang."
