Although its original and primary purpose is the regulation of the use of magic and of magical education, Curacies enjoy broad investigative powers as a ''de facto'' consequence of nearly everything on Equus being magical in some way. (Compare the use of the Commerce Clause in the US constitution.) While Curacies can bring any charges in non-magical court, the Courts of the magico-legal establishment are not empowered to actually ''try'' any case except for violations specifically of magic-related law. Supposing, for example, that a curial investigation of unsafe labor practices in an alchemical works had revealed that the owner had been bribing a local politician, the curacy could handle the matter of the violation of magical health and safety regulations in its own courts, but would have to bring ordinary criminal charges against the owner and politician relating to the bribery, since these are not magical crimes. A Curacy of Harmonia is a magisterial jurisdiction of lawful magic. Curacies effectively replace the pre-catastrophic magico-legal system of Ducal and Royal archmagi supervising ensconced archmagi who possessed original jurisdiction to hear cases of magical law in their sconces.

Curacies of Harmonia include the Oneiric Curacy, the Grand Oriental Curacy, the Grand Occidental Curacy, besides possibly others.

The leader of a curacy is a Procurator. Procurators are appointed for a single five-year term by the Curatrix of Harmonia with confirmation by the Harmonic College of Archmagi. Procurators are in practice always chosen from ensconced Archmagi, usually in the curacy they are being elevated to lead.

The courts of the curacy operate using the inquisitorial system, in which the court is actively involved in the investigation of the facts of the case, whereas the criminal and civil courts of Harmonia operate on the adversarial system.

Curacies are subdivided into Archmagical Sconces, as in the precatastrophic magico-legal system.
