Hues Family Tree
This family tree contains information from the Hues family private genealogical records relevant to tracing the matrilineal line of descent from their earliest confidently known ancestor, the alicorn Twilight Sparkle, to Emerald Hues and her sisters (and Emerald's unborn child Amethyst Hues). Note that these are from their private genealogy books and therefore have a high degree of completeness; the Hues also maintain public books that omit certain information for various reasons (protecting the privacy of anonymous fathers, etc.).

Star Sparkle was left stranded on the Isle of Yore in the wake of the Catastrophe. Amid fears that another abomination of the Dread Pantheon would resume the invasion to finish En-Netsusep's work and that one of their goals might be to eradicate past and present pony leaders and their descendants, Star Sparkle destroyed all records about herself to hide her parentage. She kept only a single magically encrypted written copy that she closely guarded at all times and only decrypted many years later when it seemed clear that another attack was not forthcoming. She also changed her name post-Catastrophe, referring to herself as Sparkle Hues. Sparkle Hues, truly her mother's daughter as a natural deep thinker and worry-wart, was unwilling to let her descending lineage be left to the cruel randomness of chance in a world growing harsh after the collapse of civilization. Therefore, when she wanted a foal, she applied ruthless logic to her situation and decided to become pregnant by the most magically fit stallion she could find, a hedge mage named Midnight Spell.

Her life was fraught with sorrow, losing two foals to the harsh conditions of her time.

Aventurine Hues and her husband Shamrock Field combined their talents to achieve great success at growing highly profitable crops. They were able to buy enough land to expand beyond being simple yeoman farmers and establish a wide-sprawling plantation with tenant workers laboring under them. However, under advice from relatives who'd taken up soldiering, they later relocated to safer territory and sold off much of this land when its defensibility became difficult in the face of rising pressure from warlords and raiders.

She took up with him, and in time became part of his circle of favored mares long enough to get pregnant before returning home to the East of Yore.

After having a foal, Magnetite Hues used the family's growing wealth to buy farmland in a productive, relatively well-defended area.

Chromite Hues showed a keen aptitude for growing things and was therefore tasked from an early age with managing planting activities, her parents being primarily focused on their business of making military equipment. She was a farmer and planter all her life. She maintained the slowly growing collection of books and artifacts her family had acquired with great care, because the value of the knowledge it contained had been instilled into her. However, much of it remained unused under her custodianship since she was (rather abberantly for a Hues) not an avid reader herself.

After having foals, she elected not to resume magical life extension, instead letting nature take its course so that she could grow old and die alongside her earth pony husband.

Malachite Hues, an earth pony who was unusually knowledgeable about magic, was self-described as something of an "academic mercenary" and worked closely with a number of magical researchers, hiring herself out to provide technical labor and assistance for their experiments. In one such experiment, she worked with a unicorn named Bright Beacon to investigate trans-dimensional teleportation magic. One of their first active transport experiments involved a small beacon, which mysteriously disappeared and could not be retrieved. Fearing that it had accidentally ended up in the Dread Dimension, they terminated experiments and set up "sanitation measures" (alchemical explosive and napalm charges) around the test site while they watched and waited for activity. Several days later, a small military expedition of armed shadhavar scouts teleported in. Malachite and Bright Beacon thoroughly "sanitized" them and buried any remains under many tons of collapsing rubble before fleeing the site. Despite this first misadventure, they continued working together and eventually had foals.

Ruby Hues was well-taught in magic by her mother, an accomplished wizard, and earned a degree in magic specializing in crystallothaumics and enchanting. She made use of this to establish a business as an extremely respected high-class jeweler which put her in routine contact with the elites of her city. She fought in the Camel Wars, using her magical prowess to devastating effect and gaining great profit by bringing home large quantities of precious metals and gems she recovered from the enemy "on her own initiative" (ie., loot obtained in perhaps questionable ways that her superiors nonetheless turned a blind eye to). For her successful military service in helping to repel the camels (and by exerting the influence of her now considerable wealth), she was made a Dame and then a Lady, with granted landholdings. This title was passed down heritably, thus establishing the subsequent Ladies Hues.

Mica Hues was one of only a few earth ponies in the direct Hues lineage to date. She was also unusual in being one of the relatively few earth pony mages to have ever existed. After a short period of minor adventuring in her young adult life which she found distasteful, she settled in quietly at home and occupied herself with using her preternatural abilities in earth pony magic to improve the family's agricultural ventures and wrote a number of academic articles on pest control and yield enhancement. Disappointingly, many of these went largely undernoticed and unutilized because of the rarity of earth ponies with both access to them and the magicality, skill, and desire to apply these methods scientifically.

Kamacite Hues was sometimes referred to as "the pegasus who didn't know she wasn't a unicorn." Her pursuits included extensive experimentation with ritual magic, as well as the practice of crafting spells with her natural pegasus magic. She used these to good effect in numerous adventures. Many ponies were uncomfortable with a pegasus challenging racial preconceptions by showing such unicorn-like acumen with magic, and to her annoyance she was dogged with occasional rumors about being a witch drawing upon "unnatural" sources of power.

Citrine Hues was an astronomer with a great interest in solar observations. She built several telescopes and tested various concepts in crystal lenses and filters enchanted or alchemically treated to dynamically limit their light throughput, seeking combinations that could let a single instrument be safely and effectively used for both solar and night sky astronomy. She had no foals early in life, but paused the use of magical life extension to become pregnant at the age of 96, giving birth at 97. She met the father of her foal during an expedition to observe a solar eclipse, but due to their large disparity in circumstances and noble status, they had no further relationship after conception and Citrine never revealed the father's identity. Feudal laws created challenges to inheritance of property and titles for the foals of unwed parents, leading to the strange circumstance of Citrine legally adopting her own natural-born child to ensure there was a paper trail laying out a clear legal path to the passage of her title. A notary, under mysterious circumstances said to involve a late-night visitation, also signed off on an unusual affidavit attesting that the foal's father was "of unspecified name, but certified to be of noble title."
Citrine's sister, Aquatic Hues, served for a time as the baronial hydrologist in the Yore Valley Barony. Her tenure was uneventful, but one of her later successors would be found lacking in competence, with tragic consequences for the Barony and a resulting chain of events that drew Aquatic's grandniece ("Cloudy" Quartz Hues) into an adventure there.

Rose Quartz was a soft-spoken librarian-mage with little inclination to adventure or other life-disrupting undertakings. She married Fierce Feather, a pegasus knight, for his combination of strong magicality and outstanding physical characteristics, sensing a unique opportunity to attempt to become pregnant with a pegacorn by him. Their marriage was fraught with difficulty at times, as they were largely opposite in temperment, but did succeed in producing a daughter who, while not quite a true pegacorn, combined many of the strengths of her parents.

Quartz Hues' father gave her the affectionate nickname of 'Cloudy', which she went by her entire life. She was in many ways her father's daughter and became a knight herself under his training. In an adventure recorded in the Further to Fall campaign, she helped rescue the son of the Yore Valley baroness in 2944 after the baronial castle was overrun. On a later mission, she started a brief but torrid affair with another powerfully magical unicorn mage-knight named Blazing Star and deliberately became pregnant by him. She hid this pregnancy for the remainder of the mission, and after its victorious conclusion she went home while he went his own way and continued his military career, never knowing that he had fathered a foal with her. Facing the same inheritance difficulties for her own foal as her grandmother Citrine had, Cloudy Quartz's solution was more forceful: she had an after-hours closed-door meeting with the Baroness of the land she lived in, who emerged looking shaken. The Baroness was thereafter 'convinced' to be much more amenable to granting single mothers the right to have their out-of-wedlock foals recognized as legitimate heirs if they so wished without facing legal challenges or difficulty.

Marble Hues was an architect who traveled extensively to study the building techniques and styles of many different localities. She had no foals early in life, but paused the use of magical life extension to become pregnant and give birth at the age of 58. Her faintly striped brindle coat pattern sometimes led to her being mistaken for a zony.

Obsidian's life was surrounded by rumors of valor and/or villainy (often dependant on perspective), with mere idle talk often difficult to distinguish from fact. What is true is that in her various pillagings, she stole a unique grimoire that contained, in a single large volume, copies of the Greater and Lesser Keys of Solomane, important treatises on conjuration via ceremonial magic that had been thought lost for centuries. She also managed to aquire other extremely rare books and artifacts through various means that she generally refused to discuss. Her tongue was said to be as sharp as her namesake stone; among other incidents, she once loudly threatened to rip out the liver of a particularly irksome gossiper spreading stories about her, which predictably backfired and sent further stories flying. She was also adventurous and controversial in attaining motherhood: unsatisfied with settling for only half the available gene pool while searching for the best possible qualities to impart into her offspring, she used a rare mare-to-stallion spell to conceive a foal with Willow Wand of the notable Wand house. By what arrangement this was agreed to was kept highly secret, and the "father" was never publically identified, but both parties seemed well pleased with any deal that might have been made and were good friends ever after. This only triggered further rumors, but they subsided in time and by all accounts Obsidian was a highly devoted and loving mother to her foal, which helped to turn her popular image around somewhat from the 'dark horse' figure she had been previously - or at least gave her a redeeming complexity that made some ponies more hesitant to judge.

Tourmaline Hues was a wizard who studied at Radiance Magic College and the Crooked Tower, afterwards accepting a position as a professor for a time. Occasionally taking after her mother, she would sometimes disappear mysteriously between semesters, usually returning quietly with interesting items to add to her private collection but offering few explanations for how she'd come across them. She was the first Hues to intermarry with a Pin, a fellow noble family in Sparkle City.

Sapphire Hues was a mage who investigated precatastrophic ruins and wrote speculative science fiction works about the lost technologies they revealed. Most of these technologies were not, strictly speaking, truly lost, with precatastrophic records and texts still extant describing them. Her goal was in large part to inspire and fuel the burgeoning interest in rebuilding the infrastructure and base industrial capabilities needed to make advanced technologies practical to implement once again, believing that this would greatly benefit ponykind. Socially, she was not known to be hospitable or inclined to consider suitors, rarely entertaining guests outside of family. She was also said to be somewhat abrasive in person. In one (in)famous instance, a Pin who was a haberdasher proposed a lavender marriage of political convenience; she responded by saying that the only reason she would ever marry was to produce quality foals and his genes simply couldn't hope to make the cut. Misunderstanding, he retorted that he would never make anything so pedestrian as jeans, as he specialized in fine formal dinnerwear. After laughing about the unintentional pun, however, they eventually came around to becoming platonic friends, one of the few Sapphire ever had.

Ruby II attended Radiance Magic College and studied generalist magic. Romantically, she preferred mares, carrying on a long-term relationship with Alabaster Figure, a fellow unicorn who was a powerful mage but better known professionally as a well regarded sculptor. Ruby II had no foals early in life, but eventually she and Alabaster finally decided to employ magical means to have a child via the same mare-to-stallion spell Obsidian had used. She paused the use of magical life extension to become pregnant at the age of 52, giving birth at 53. The couple never married, due to a same-sex marriage not being a politically wise option for a noble, but did raise the foal together. Some ponies inquired about the foal's parentage, due to being unaware or unwilling to believe that sex-changing magic was possible (or sometimes not understanding that Alabaster was a romantic partner) but Ruby II usually avoided discussing the issue by adroitly redirecting conversations to other topics.

Aquamarine Hues was a museum curator with an eye for fine magical artifacts, but unlike some of her forebears she was content to let them come to her and leave the adventurous work of retrieval to others. However, when it came to books, she was often inclined to make personal purchases under the table, since the museum typically would not buy them and she was only too eager to add them to the family library. Her marriage to Bobby Pin was another intermarriage between a Pin and a Hues, further entangling the fortunes of the two families.

Amber Hues was shy and reserved, but very beautiful (traits she would end up sharing with her similarly colored great-great-great-granddaughter Topaz Hues), which proved to be something of a cross for her to bear as numerous unwanted suiters tried to get her attention. She never married, and after she had a foal out of wedlock by a stallion of her choosing, eventually became more forceful about rebuffing those who still persisted in the hopes that they could usurp her fatherless child with their own offspring. This led to several colorful incidents of overzealous bachelors being ejected, sometimes literally, from the Hues manor and grounds.

Opal was an explorer-traveler-trader in her earlier years, often journeying to far off places to find or purchase rare artifacts. Several of her best finds and notable adventures occurred in the Bactrian Bazaar, and she returned from one such trip pregnant by a fellow adventurer named Lantern Light. She raised her daughter Diamond as a single mother. After her younger adventuring days she settled down and served as the Lord Mayor of Sparkle City, drawing on her acquired experiences with diplomacy and negotiation as a trader and adventurer to succeed in politics. During public controversy over a denied appeal in a woefully unjust death penalty case, she exercised her executive power to order an emergency halt to executions. She followed up by managing to legislate a permanent abolition of the death penalty, delivering a famously fiery speech declaring that she'd "seen enough bloodshed in the barbarian parts of the world, and societies who wish to shine with the light of civilization must rise above barbaric methods."
Aragonite Hues, a male sibling of Opal, married Prissy Pin, thereby joining the Pin house. Their foals included Prim Pin (female unicorn, current Lord Mayor of Sparkle City) and Vorpal Pin (male unicorn) AKA White Eyes. Prim Pin's son is Sharp Pin (male unicorn). Vorpal Pin's daughters by Spectacular Librarian (a pegasus with mixed earth pony ancestry) are Truthful Twinkle (female unicorn, deceased) and Elite Librarian (female alicorn, born 2 Heat 3319).

Diamond accompanied her mother Opal Hues on numerous journeys in her childhood. After getting a degree in generalist magic, she took graduate courses pursuing her interest in thaumo-archaeology, during which she followed her mother's example and began traveling extensively in search of ruins to explore and artifacts to collect. She met Shining Facets in the Pony Republic while making her way home from one such journey and was pregnant with Emerald by the time they reached Sparkle City. During this journey, Diamond Hues and Shining Facets encountered and destroyed the lich Central Fossa, Terror of the South, near the Great Southern Bay. After finally reaching Sparkle City, they married.

Amethyst was conceived on 24 Gourds 3336 (day 37 of PRPG2), in Crystal Cliffs. She was fathered by a changeling, Cloud Lane. Although her mother and father never legally married, the couple stayed together and raised her as a family. From her father, she also had an older half-sister (Discolor), who she was quite close to. After attending Radiance Magic College, she attended the Crooked Tower. As an extremely magical pegacorn, she took the rare opportunity this afforded her to do graduate work involving combining unicorn and pegasus magic in novel ways. After completing schooling, she took to exploration and adventuring for a time before settling into working closer to home as a wizard.
