A city and its dependent villages and towns located Northwest of the Western Dusts. It was a cloistered wizard-city founded around the tower of Bluestar the Brilliant a few decades after the catastrophe, but the cloister fell hundreds of years ago. New Canterlot was spared the worst of the Dark Age by its cloister and, later, its geographical isolation; it is cut off from easy contact with the Dusts by extensive growth of the Crystal Forest.
Although occasionally visited by travelers and traders, New Canterlot is generally isolationist and self-sufficient. Knowledge of it is scanty in the Dusts. It is said to be ruled by a pegacorn called Queen Meridian. Its most remarkable feature is rumored to be an actual lake, which could be fed by a spring, or possibly created by powerful magic. New Canterlot has an astronomical observatory and a temple of the Old Religion, the Temple of the Undying Sun. Besides students from New Equestria, its seminary also attracts particularly determined ponies seeking a traditional religious education from elsewhere on the Isle of Yore. Clerics trained there are found throughout the island.
New Canterlot considers itself the capital of the Kingdom of New Equestria. Its de facto level of control over its dependent settlements only approaches that which would fully justify this claim. Its territory is divided into civil parishes.
