Night Chime is the Assistant District Attorney for the Docktown Bureau of Investigation.

Bio

Night Chime was given to a Docktown orphanage at the approximate age of 2 and spent 3 years there before being adopted by two ponies that could be considered Dread Dimension-ophiles. As a result of their enthusiasm he knows a little about his race's history, but much of that is flawed due to the vast amount of incomplete or false information about the mysterious place. That said, he does maintain some Shadhavar traditions, such as keeping his leitmotif covered.

His predatory baser nature and the low level fear his appearance instilled in ponies led him to become a natural bully throughout much of his early life, and several additional marked instances of profiling led him to a career in law. Immediately after high school he attended Eastern Ponyland University on a host of scholarships and attained several degrees, all based upon various aspects of law, eventually attaining a Juris Doctor.

Since first finding employment in the Docktown prosecuter's office he's aggressively pursued both criminals and promotion. His particular talents lend him an eye for intricacy and has used his race's keen ears to great effect to quickly understand and progress in both his hobbies and his professional life. This has led to a particular skill at picking locks and cracking safes, a talent he occasionally lends to forensics teams, as well as by finding hidden caches of evidence at crime sites. He was additionally once instrumental in identifying and locating a bomb threat against a venue being used for a political debate.

While it is not publicly known, he also has been individually responsible for the ferreting out of significant amounts of corruption within the Docktown legal system, with his intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the system allowing him to do so though anonymous tips that have stayed anonymous despite considerable efforts to identify their source. While the source of the tips remains anonymous, people have caught on that they had to of originated from someone inside the police. This anonymous tipper has come to be called “the blower” due to their tendency to blow up careers and for what many on the force say they’d rather the tipper be doing instead of stemming the flow of dirty money. In fact, his current position as Assistant District Attorney was attained following the political fallout of a particularly nasty case involving the failure to prosecute, subsequent prosecution by an outside authority (the Archmagical Sconce), and eventual imprisonment of a very popular DBoI donor.

He lives in a apartment in Docktown, and has only very rarely left the city (mostly for field trips when he was a youth).

Talents

Nearly all of Night Chime's talents aid him in his chosen career. His eyes and ears have been trained to pick out inconsistencies, his music magic is intricate and precise, and his frame is lithe and slight, which is useful on the occasions he doesn't want to intimidate. He stays in shape by swimming and tennis, primarily. His somewhat alien appearance and natural talent for controlling his tone also does a fantastic job of suppressing his tells, making him a fantastic liar when he has need to be. Like many shadhavar he enjoys setting his own strength against others in magic duels and has become fairly prominent in the regional league. And, of course, he wouldn't be where he is without a strong knowledge of law, as well as managerial and administrative talents in directing the course of both investigations and prosecutions of offenders. He also likes to make models.

Appearance

He is a dark gray shadhavar stallion with dark blue eyes. If nothing else, he wears a similarly dark blue leitmotif wrap. More frequently, though, he dresses to the level of his office with a collar and tie.

Epilogue

The Shadhavar of the Dread Dimensions are a tribal people. While competent and strong, they did not work together well, and so in the onset of the immigration of these friendly herbivore prey-animals the shadhavar did not feel threatened and so continued in their ways, fighting their traditional battles against their traditional enemies and rivals. A tradition that led to stagnation across the generations as the shadhavar focused more on harming their enemies than on helping each other.

Night Chime sought to change all that. He could see how little shadhavar had developed technologically and societally (dueling to the death was common, as was deadly attempts at bridenapping/groomnapping of even those already married, and children were put through often-fatal trials to achieve “adulthood”, to name just a few of many of their self-defeating practices) in the Dread Dimensions despite never facing anything so terrible as the Catastrophe and the Crystal Forest. In the time since Harmony ponies had outpaced shadhavar more than a hundredfold in technology, prosperity, and shear population. Night Chime thought the best answer to this stagnation was to end the old rivalries in order to come together as a society. With Docktown in mind, he sought to bring the tribes and guilds together to form a central mecca of trade and culture, to serve as a capital and flagship city of the shadhavar revolution; a spring for shadhavar society in which a new nation and identity could be formed that could coexist with pony society without being subsumed.

Leveraging his alliances with the likes of an ex-messenger of the dread pantheon and the new alicorns of the isle of yore, he threw his whole being into this new effort. Years of effort and diplomacy trying to push shadhavar, as a whole, into the new era.

Unfortunately it proved to be too much, too quickly, for a people very set in their ways. After stepping on far too many hooves, Night Chime was killed at a town hall meeting on (insert date a little less than two years after Star was revived). Without Night Chime to spearhead the shadhavar unification effort, it more than collapsed, it exploded. Tribes and guilds that had been fighting for millennia roared into total, open war after being forced together with concession after concession in Night Chime's attempts to unite them. An open war that never truly ended, even after several tribes had been completely wiped out. Even after the bloodletting had calmed down and the remaining tribes had returned to their more traditional infighting, and less than half a millennia later, Mel-Anhu’s prophesy to Night Chime (now found to be self-fulfilling) came to fruition. The old songs were forgotten, the old ways were lost, and shadhavar became no different than ponies, their cultural finally fading away entirely.
