Human

Humans are very similar to the Earth species in all respects and exist in a similar variety of colors and sizes. Most of the humans of the Shunhaurat are light to medium brown in color with dark brown or black hair, but humans from farther afield may have other colors of skin and hair. Among the species of the Shunhaurat, humans are noted for their dexterity, versatility in adopting many different ways of life, and their relatively prolific reproduction. Humans live in both the city and the countryside.

Giant

Giants are large humanoids, about 2.8-3.4m tall on average and weight about 190-280kg. They usually have dark reddish-brown skin and dark, straight hair. Giants live about 200 years, and reproduce slowly, barely producing more than two children on average per couple. Giants tend to be more intelligent and knowledgeable than humans, with their long lifespan giving them an advantage in accumulating skills and lore. They tend to dwell in cities rather than the countryside, often in communal dwellings that accommodate their size.

The giants tell that they were created by the Serene Goddess to serve as guides and teachers to Humans. Some have interpreted this as a mandate to rule humans, leading to conflicts.

Half-Giant

Humans and giants are able to mate and produce offspring, half-giants. However, half-giants are themselves sterile, so there are no quarter-giants, three-quarter-giants, etc. Their phenotype is intermediate in most respects. Both human males with giant females and giant males with human females are possible, though there is a greater risk of premature birth in the latter case.

Cultural views of half-giants vary. They are sometimes valued as "natural eunuchs" in royal court, incapable of betraying their rulers and establishing their own dynasty. They tend to be healthier and more vigorous than either giants or humans. In Usiren, most giants do not approve of sexual intercourse with humans, but acknowledge that it happens from time to time, and the community opprobrium falls more on the giant parent than the human parent or the half-giant offspring.

Unicorn / Shadhavar

Unicorns are mostly-carnivorous quadrupeds with a single hollow horn, which is connected to their respiratory system and capable of emitting musical sounds. Urban examples, and those subject to the rule of city kings, are mostly called by a word we translate "unicorns," whereas ones living in the mountains and countryside are called by a word we translate "shadhavar." Traditionally, they live in nomadic family groups. They are capable of picking up items by opposing their cloven hooves with a modified dew-claw on their forelegs, but they lack the fine dexterity of the other species. They are the fastest species, though scorpion-people are not much slower. Unicorns are more goat-like than horse-like, and are capable of climbing up quite precipitous terrain.

Unicorns have a variety of coat colors, mostly golden-yellows, whites and browns. Unicorns reaching adulthood have a life expectancy of about 50-70 years. Adults weigh about 40-70 kg and stand about 60-85 cm tall at the withers. Unicorn horn-song can powerfully affect the emotions of the hearers, including those of different species.
