Avatar/Hanwang Desert - Wiki of Yore

The Hanwang (寒亡沙漠) desert, the "Cold Death," is a desert in the Northern Earth Kingdom, West of Ba Sing Se. It is smaller than the hotter and more southerly Siwang desert. It is also called Hantan (寒滩), the Cold Sands, by the Sandbender tribes. Although it is described as being Cold, and indeed is very cold at night and in the Winter, the Hanwang can also be dangerously hot during Summer afternoons, with daytime highs regularly reaching 45 degrees Celsius at that time of year.

The Hanwang desert is the place of exile for the Nara clan of Yonggan people. Its exports include trained dwarf badgermoles, medicinal herbs, and minerals.

滿月泉	Full Moon Spring	An oasis town featuring a round spring.
大堡綠洲	Dabaolüzhou	A large fortress protecting an oasis, built in the days of the Great Ri.
孟泉	Mengquan	An oasis and surrounding town said to be the first oasis by the Sandbending tribes, important in their mythic history.
馬鳥綠洲	Matuolüzhou	Ostrich Horse oasis, named for a feral herd of these animals that formerly inhabited it.

中綠洲	Zhonglüzhou	An oasis town at an important crossroads.
军泉	Junquan	An oasis that was uninhabited until Hao-Ting soldiers fortified it about a hundred years ago to supply a nearby fort.
八只水袋泉	Bazhishuidai Spring	"Eight Watersacks Spring," named for the number each person ought to have with them to be assured of making it to the next oasis.
小西泉	Little Western Spring	A small oasis community in the far West of the Hanwang Desert.

隔堡垒	Fort Ge	A major fortress separating the Hanwang from Abka lands. Originally protected a hard-won conquest of the Central Earth Kingdom (the Western Bank of the Ostrich Horse River
江堡垒	River Fort	A fort guarding a bridge, mostly used by Abka nomads these days, though some amount of trade between the Montane Yonggan and Ba Sing Se uses the associated bridge.
小山堡	Hill Fort	A fort on the extreme East of the Hanwang, with a commanding view of the desert perimeter road.
馬鳥江	Ostrich Horse River	A large river, fed mostly by tributaries arising in Eastern Abka lands and in the mountains of the Nemuland, which empties into the brackish Western Lake.
