Crash Wakeup is a one-off set in the Beyond the Twelve Worlds universe, before the planned main campaign.

You are the awake-crew of a hibernation transport ship on a month-long journey to a wormhole gate. It's a journey that your ship has made many times before, a few crewmembers overseeing the automated ship systems and keeping an eye on the hibernating passengers. It pays well, but it's pretty boring... usually.

The Mission: Your transport ship, the IS Pasithee, transports its passengers in induced hibernation. They are brought on board already hibernating, and are packed into large hibernacula with just enough space to shuffle them around for daily medical checks by the ship's hibernation technologists. The awake crew, a small team, look after the ship while it cruises for weeks or months. (There are some other crew members in hibernation, who will be woken up shortly before the destination is reached to participate in rendezvous, docking, maintenance, logistical and administrative activities.)

The ship has left Mars (not the Solar system planet, but another named after it, in the Utu starsystem) and is traveling to Nguyen's Planet in the Isuh starsystem, via the wormhole gate connecting those systems. At this point, the Pasithee has passed the wormhole and is in deep space en route to Nguyen's Planet, to arrive in twenty-six days. It is in the acceleration phase of its brachistochrone trajectory.

The voyage so far has been uneventful, except for one passenger being brought out of hibernation due to an adverse reaction to the hibernation drugs. This passenger is staying in unoccupied crew berthing (of which there is plenty, since over half the crew is also hibernating during the cruise phase.)

The year is 2504.

Characters

These are not very detailed. Feel free to consult with me if you want to add or change things (e.g. rename them), it is probably fine.

William Wong

A wealthy young man, the scion of a family of rich philanthropists on New Iridia, William wasn't supposed to fly on the Pasithee at all, but the ship he was going to be on developed a mechanical problem after he had already been induced in hibernation. He might never have known he had gone on the Pasithee at all, except that he developed a hibernation drug allergy just before the wormhole transit and had to be woken up aboard.

Cullawine Bena

This is Cull's first mission out of a spacing college. He graduated from a fusion technician training program and is employed in that capacity on the Pasithee. His parents are part of a Singularitarian cult on a remote colony, but his grandfather, Tuesday Bena, is also a spacer and helped him get this job.

Spire Marx

Spire is a hibernation technologist on the Pasithee. She is the more junior of the two hibernation techs, and this is her fourth voyage. She wants to be a physician after getting a chance to see the stars, and plans to get out of spacing in a few years.

Rose Munshi

Rose is the second engineer of the Pasithee and the senior member of the engineering department in the awake crew for this voyage. She is nearing full retirement eligibility based on chronological age, though spending a lot of time in hibernation means that her biological age is only forty-three.

Megaman de Vires

Megaman is an advanced practice hibernation technologist, and the senior member of the medical department in the awake crew. He has been spacing before, but this is his first time on the Pasithee. He was previously a member of the Martian orbital guard. After completing his enlistment in the orbital guard, he went to school to be a hibernation technologist, and then worked on several passenger ships before joining the company of the Pasithee.

Ringo Ma

Ringo is a technician on the Pasithee. Ringo enlisted in the Allied Worlds Space Force twice and fought in the Dirac civil war intervention. He was a power technician on a huge planetary assault carrier. After the war, he returned briefly to planet life, but ended up returning to space after less than a year. He recently earned his fusion reactor operator qualification, and is part of the awake crew this time primarily to stand that watch.

Kickass McGee

Kickass is a cook and logistics specialist. He has been spacing so long that he sweats heavy water and has spent more time in the emergency stellar storm shelter than Cullawine Bena has been alive. Or so he claims. He is responsible for providing food and supplies for the awake crew.

Blee Dotcom

Blee is the second officer of the Pasithee. Blee was an officer for the Allied Worlds Space Force during the Dirac intervention, but did not manage to make satisfactory progress in its command program and decided to transition to civilian spacing. She has been somewhat happier and more successful in her new capacity. Blee is in charge of the awake crew.

Bob Bob Mobil

Bob Bob is a fusion reactor operator and technician. At mid-career, she is experienced, but something of a jobsworth, desiring to get through her career without (1) screwing anything up or (2) getting blamed for anything screwed up by someone else. She wants to get to retirement while doing the minimum amount of work that safety allows.

The Ship

The Interstellar Spaceship Pasithee is a twin-centrifuge sleeper passenger transport powered by a deuterium fusion drive, using water propellant. It transports 800 passengers in hibernation, 400 in each of two (fore and after) contra-rotating centrifugal hibernacula. Crew facilities are on the outer ("lowest") deck. Crewmembers have staterooms with two (bunk) beds.
